Description

Does your child understand that children with classic autism are just children who want friends? A is for Autism, F is for Friend: A Kid s Book for Making Friends with a Child Who Has Autism provides an inside look at the life of Chelsea, a young girl who has classic autism. In this book, Chelsea walks us through her day, including trips to the playground and park, and explains that although she sees other kids playing and wants to join them, social interaction can be tricky for her. In sharing some of her strengths and challenges, Chelsea compares them with issues that all kids face, highlighting the many things she and her schoolmates have in common. One of the goals of this book to is help typical children understand that they experience that, too! A is for Autism, F is for Friend provides an enjoyable, discussion-oriented format for teaching youth about autism.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The first thought that came to me as I read this book was how positively autism is presented. Joanna explains autism with insight and care. Having questions at the end of each chapter for future thought and discussion is a great tool for any age! --- Kathy Carter, special day class teacher, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District

Presented for kids from the perspective of a child with autism, this well-written book does a superb job of explaining typical features of autism, offering concrete guidance to peers, teachers, and family members. It is a must for every classroom and school library. --- Judith Coucouvanis, author of SUPER SKILLS

What makes someone tick? This book describes everyday experiences through the words of an 11-year old girl with autism. It helps the reader learn how someone else may experience sights, sounds, touch, tastes, and smells differently and lays a foundation of understanding for kids, parents, and teachers to communicate more effectively with someone who processes life through a different set of lenses. --- Judith A. Anderson, PhD, executive vice president, California State University
